danceABILITY w/ AXIS Dance Company
May 6-7, 2017 at the KDA Dance Studio at Garces Memorial High School
Kern Dance Alliance (KDA) is teaming up with the League of Dreams to bring the first dance + disability program, danceABILITY, to Kern County. Led by one of the world’s most acclaimed and innovative ensembles of performers with and without disabilities, AXIS Dance Company will inspire diverse populations to dance. The AXIS residency will provide creative dance classes, a professional development course geared toward educators working with diverse populations, and a professional dance performance.
Saturday, May 6th - AXIS Dance Company Youth Class - Time TBA
AXIS Dance Company dancers will teach students the company’s form of inclusive creative dance that is accessible to kids with and without physical disabilities. In the class, students will have the opportunity to explore their own dance vocabulary, build confidence, practice cooperation, and develop appreciation of each other’s creative expression.
Saturday, May 6th - AXIS Dance Company Teacher Training in Physically Integrated Dance - Time TBA
The Fundamentals AXIS Dance Company offers this exciting, movement-based workshop geared toward teachers and faculty working with diverse populations, with the goal of introducing inclusive dance practices and sensitivity. The session includes learning and experiencing participatory exercises and activities for use in classrooms as well as discussion about disability, language, and the development of AXIS’ extraordinary inclusive community education program.

AXIS Dance Company exists to change the face of dance and disability. Based in Oakland, CA, AXIS is one of the world’s most acclaimed and innovative ensembles of performers with and without disabilities. Under the Artistic Direction of Judith Smith, the Company has collaborated with leading contemporary choreographers and composers, including Bill T. Jones, Stephen Petronio, Joe Goode, Victoria Marks, Ann Carlson, David Dorfman, Alex Ketley, Marc Brew, Joanna Haigood, Sonya Delwaide, Margaret Jenkins, Meredith Monk, Fred Frith and Joan Jeanrenaud.
AXIS has toured major dance venues and festivals in more than 100 cities nationwide as well as internationally to Europe and Russia. AXIS was featured twice on FOX TV’s So You Think You Can Dance as well as on KQED’s SPARK program and KRCB’s One in 5 Stories. AXIS’ work has been honored with seven Isadora Duncan Dance Awards.
Through the AXIS dance education and outreach program, Dance Access, thousands of children and adults of all ages and abilities are inspired to dance each year. October 7- November 4, 2017 - KDA Dance Studio at Garces Memorial High School
Fresh off the heels of the spring 2017 AXIS Dance Company residency, KDA and the League of Dreams will offer a 5-week dance + disability program aimed at diverse individuals, ages 5-22. Participants will learn inclusive, creative dance that is accessible to movers with and without physical disabilities. The program will culminate with a performance at the historic Bakersfield Fox Theater.
