What are the requirements to participate in the League of Dreams?
To qualify, the child must be between the ages of 5 and 22 AND have an IEP on file with the school or have a medical diagnosis from a licensed physician. We can also accept the “Face Sheet” from Kern Regional Center. Document must contain the athlete’s name, date of birth and complete diagnosis.
How long do the seasons last and when are they played?
Each program is unique. Most programs run 6-10 weeks. Many programs run on weekends and a few run on weekdays. Please look for fliers for specific days and time frames.
Are there required practices during non-game days during the season?
Due to many of our athletes having outside therapies, doctor’s appointments, high-cost medical and therapeutic devices and needs, we do not have any practice times. The only time requirement is the game or class times. Times for games and classes vary, but typically last for 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
What is the cost to play with the League of Dreams?
Due to amazing community support, we are currently able to offer our services at a very low cost to families. The registration ranges from $15 to $40 depending on the time of registration and the program. The only other out-of-pocket costs are if you choose to purchase your own equipment or if you choose to purchase additional pictures for your athlete for seasons with photos (a small picture package is included with registration, but our photographers offer affordably priced extended packages as well). We also offer scholarships for those who cannot afford the registration fee. A signed letter in writing must be submitted to be considered for a scholarship.
What is included with registration?
Included in your registration are the season uniform shirt, a small picture package (baseball, bowling, basketball, dance, cheer, fencing), a sports pin at the end of the season, hat (baseball season only), the use of any equipment needed for the season, and your reserved space at each game/session of the season. Athletes will receive a League of Dreams medal and lanyard at the end of their first season to hold their pins.
How do you know what team to put my child on?
Prior to both Baseball and Basketball seasons, we hold mandatory season “try-outs,” where we use a scale to determine your athlete’s ability level. We also place on divisions based on age. The two combined give us a pretty good gauge of where athletes are best placed. Once athletes are placed on a team, we will place them on the website. You can then login to your MyLoD account (where you register) to see placement.
Who is available to help my child if he/she needs it?
During every season, the League of Dreams has volunteers that we know as “angels” that come out to the games and participate with our athletes on the field, court, or lane. These volunteers go through training with our staff and work very closely with your athlete. You also have the option, if you feel it best for your athlete, to volunteer a family member to act as his/her “angel.” Some of our athletes are simply more comfortable with family members, and as long as they register as such, we support family and friend involvement.
How do I get involved with League of Dreams?
Athlete: To become an athlete, create an account on our website with your e-mail and password, then “Add player” and complete your registration. It is very important to enter the correct Date of Birth, last immunizations, medical insurance information, etc. Once those are entered, submit the form. You will know your registration is complete when you see “Registered” next to your player’s name.
Volunteer: If you’d like to become a volunteer, you must be over the age of 14, be responsible, and have a heart for individuals with disabilities. It’s very easy to create an account on our website with your e-mail and password, then “Add volunteer” and complete your registration. Each season, you must log onto your “My LoD” and update your registration for the season. If you ever have questions about your login and password, you may contact the LoD office to reset.
